With larger cells and more of them packed together in batteries, managing heat becomes all the more important. "Smaller cells have the tendency to reject heat faster," explained Ahmad Pesaran, energy storage group manager at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. But doing so at larger scales and with new systems requires additional scrutiny and training for the unique challenges posed and the growing pains that may arise. Storing electricity is also crucial for smoothing over peaks and valleys in output from wind and solar.īatteries, especially the lithium-ion variety, are largely filling this role. Saving electrons for later is important for applications like electric vehicles, and denser batteries mean vehicles can go farther with less weight, a major consideration for fuel-conscious airlines. Though the aircraft are now flying again with safety retrofits, the episode highlights some of the emerging concerns around cutting-edge clean technologies, particularly those that store large amounts of energy. The agency faulted Boeing, GS Yuasa and FAA for shortcomings in their respective roles in the 787 grounding. National Transportation Safety Board released its report on the Japan Airlines fire. Federal Aviation Administration to ground the entire 787 fleet, the first time the agency had given such an order for a line of aircraft since 1979.Įarlier this month, the U.S. Five days later, another 787, this one operated by All Nippon Airways, made an emergency landing in Japan after pilots received a battery malfunction warning. In that time, the plane logged 22 flight cycles without incident. The incident was troubling because Boeing had delivered the aircraft to the airline just 18 days prior. The culprit was a lithium-ion battery manufactured by GS Yuasa, which was found to be under a condition known as a thermal runaway, in which the heat from a failing cell causes itself and surrounding cells to fail, thereby generating more heat. The batteries hissed, leaked fluid and popped, giving one firefighter a minor burn on his neck.īy 12:19 p.m., firefighters had declared the event "controlled," having removed the APU battery after extinguishing it with further doses of Halotron. The flames went out, but another firefighter saw that the batteries were still giving off heat and appeared to rekindle. Responders attempted to extinguish the heat source with Halotron, a fire suppressant. He tried to use a fire extinguisher, but the blaze didn't go out.įirefighters arrived at the scene at 10:37 a.m., and using a thermal imaging camera, they looked through the smoke in the equipment bay and saw a softball-sized glow. 7, 2013, about a minute after all 183 passengers and 11 crew members from Japan Airlines Flight 008 disembarked at Boston's Logan International Airport, a member of the cleaning crew spotted smoke in the aft cabin of the Boeing 787-8.Ī mechanic then opened the aft electronic equipment bay of the plane, parked at the airport gate, and saw billowing smoke and flames coming from the batteries for the 787's auxiliary power unit (APU).

However before we get into the workout, let's discuss what some of the basics of throwing sports: Throwing sports are still quite popular in track and field events, especially in high school. Just because not a lot of attention is directed toward these sports doesn't mean the athletes should be kept in the dark about the type of training they should be doing. A comprehensive training program that encompasses all of a throwers is in fact more than meets the eye. This two-armed, horizontal swing is then repeated for as many times as the athlete feels necessary to build up sufficient momentum and establish a rhythm. The final product is that they are integrated together to create a crisp and powerful throw. Again, note that the trajectory of the swing must be kept as horizontally straight as possible, and not resemble that of a parabola.ĭepending on the personal preference and level of performance for each athlete, it may also be advantageous to shift the weight distribution from side to side during the swing, as this will help build up momentum even further. The athlete, now with both hands gripping the discus, must then swing both arms back towards the side of the throwing arm. As the throwing arm swings over, the throwing hand and the discus will naturally fall into the non-throwing hand. Note that the non-throwing arm must also continue to be held out straight onto either side of the torso, and raised almost up to shoulder-height. The trajectory of the throwing arm's swing must be as horizontally straight as possible, and not resemble that of a parabola. The throwing hand must always be on the top side of the discus.įrom the start position, the athlete must begin to swing the throwing arm, keeping it straight and outstretched, towards the opposite side of the body. No finger should be hanging off the discus.ĭo not make the mistake of gripping the discus single-handedly by placing the throwing hand on the underside of the discus. However, unlike the grip strategy above, do not move the throwing hand towards the edge. Move the index and middle fingers of the throwing hand close together, then evenly spread out all the remaining fingers. Slide the throwing hand up towards the edge of the discus, so that the knuckles of the fingers, excluding that of the thumb, are aligned with the rim and the fingertips are hanging off the side.Ģ. There are two ways that the fingers and thumb of the throwing hand can be arranged on the top side of the discus:ġ. Note that the discus must be gripped single-handedly by the throwing hand, without support from the non-throwing hand. Furthermore, both arms should be held out straight onto either side of the torso, and raised almost up to shoulder-height. The upper body must also lean forwards slightly, so that the chest is over the knees. The athlete can either distribute the weight evenly on both legs, or put the majority on the non-throwing leg (the leg that is on the same side of the body as the non-throwing arm). Next, the athlete must assume a half-squat position, with the legs shoulder-width apart and the knees and waist slightly bent. In other words, the athlete must be 180 degrees away from the landing sector. Once the athlete has determined his start point at the very back of the throwing circle (assuming that the front of the throwing circle is the part closest to the landing sector), he must first make sure that his body is completely facing away from the landing sector. It is used mostly by beginning athletes, who are able to generate a low level of spin.Īlthough a discus with a higher concentration of its weight in the rim will be more difficult to throw, it will also be able to travel a greater distance, if thrown properly, by producing greater angular momentum, which results in a more stable flight. Center-Weighted Discus: In this discus, 60 - 70 % of the total weight is from the rim. It is used mostly by intermediate athletes, who are able to generate a moderate level of spin.Ĥ. Low Spin Discus: In this discus, 75 - 80 % of the total weight is from the rim. It is used mostly by advanced athletes, who are able to generate a high level of spin.ģ. High Spin Discus: In this discus, 80 - 84 % of the total weight is from the rim alone. It is used mostly by top athletes, who are able to generate a significant level of spin.Ģ. Very High Spin Discus: In this discus, 85 - 92 % of the total weight is from the rim alone. There are four main types of discus that a competitor can use, depending on his individual preference and level of performance:ġ. That is not a good payback in any situation, and it does not take into account the costs of addressing termites, dry rot, mold or paint failure.ĭense-pack cellulose insulation is also not a good product for old houses. In this case, it would take 20 years for you to recoup the money you spent on the insulation. You might spend $8,000 to have your house walls insulated and save about $400 per year on heating and air conditioning costs. One other factor in your insulation decision is payback. It's also a good idea to seal and insulate the box sills in your basement - the area where the beams or floor joists rest on top of the foundation. Therefore, you should seal and insulate your attic space to a minimum of an R-49 with eave ventilation. Heat loss in a house happens primarily in an upward movement, like a chimney. There is one type of insulation you can install to prevent heat loss in your historic house. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a ruling (PDF, 4 MB) indicating that the installation of replacement siding over original siding adds little to no insulation benefit. This barrier stops the free exchange of air and traps more moisture. Vinyl siding is installed with backer board (insulation board), and the combination of these two layers creates a vapor barrier on the outside of the wall. However, replacement vinyl siding will make the problem worse. Many homeowners decide to solve the problem by having vinyl siding installed. Once these conditions begin inside a wall, the exterior paint often begins to peel from excess moisture. The moisture can enter the exterior sheathing and wood siding, often causing permanent exterior paint failure. This mass creates an inviting place for termites, carpenter ants, mold and dry rot. When loose, blown-in insulation gets wet, it becomes a moist mass at the bottom of the wall cavity. That warm, moist vapor enters the wall through hairline wall cracks, outlets, switches and window trim. Warm, moist air is generated in your home by cooking, taking showers, running the dishwasher, having plants-even breathing. Instead, plaster walls are designed to allow the free exchange of air and moisture. Old houses with plaster walls have no vapor barrier under the plaster to stop moist air from saturating the insulation. Loose-fill cellulose or fiberglass insulation that has been blown into the walls is one of the main causes of exterior paint failure, termites, mold and structural damage in old houses. If your historic house has original plaster walls, you should not blow insulation into the exterior walls. Wall insulation might seem like the obvious solution to heat loss in your historic house, but this is usually not a good practice. HDR allows for greater color ranges, and if your display is capable of it then it’s worth turning it on, at least to see what it’s like.Īs before, click on the monitor you want to adjust using the icons at the top of Settings > System > Display, and then scroll down to the “Use HDR” tile, and then just click the slider to “On. One final step is to activate high dynamic range (HDR), if you’d like to use it in a compatible monitor. RELATED: How to Make Your 120Hz or 144Hz Monitor Use Its Advertised Refresh Rate Using HDR With Multiple Monitors Most high refresh rate monitors require a DisplayPort connection, not HDMI, to hit their full potential. In that case, it’s probably the connection input. Say, for example, you bought a 144Hz refresh rate monitor, but you only see options up to 75Hz. It’s possible, though, you won’t see the maximum you expect. Most people will want to choose the maximum. If your monitor supports high refresh rates, clicking on this menu will show your options for refresh rates. While the GUI already offers a nice widget with a brightness slider, it’s not effective enough. Similar programs are available for macOS and Linux. Easy to use and it simply works out of the box. This screen will have a tile labeled “Choose a refresh rate,” and another drop down menu. If you’re on Windows and don’t have monitor program yet, definitely check out the Monitorian GUI. To increase the refresh rate you need to go to Settings > System > Display > Related settings > Advanced display. By default, Windows only recognizes and sets your monitors to function at 60Hz. If you have a gaming monitor with a high refresh rate such as 75Hz, 144Hz or 164Hz you’ll have to make adjustments for it too. If it doesn’t go back to Settings > System > Display > Display Resolution and find the correct resolution in the drop down menu. RELATED: Windows 11 Will Get Taskbar Clocks on Multiple Monitors Soon Adjusting Display Resolution and Refresh Ratesīy default, Windows 11 should automatically detect your monitor’s native resolution. Custom scaling, however, is not recommended as Microsoft warns it may make text and apps unreadable. Windows also allows for custom scaling, by clicking on the “Scale” tile to open a new screen. See if that’s comfortable enough for you, if not increase it using the presets you see there. Click on the icon at the top for the monitor you want to change, and then scroll down to the “Scale” tile under Scale & Layout. Go back to Settings > System > Display, as we did before. Windows allows a monitor to remain at its native resolution, while making text and icons bigger to reduce eye strain. For most people that’s just too small, and it will likely hurt your eyes after extended use. If, for example, you have a 24-inch 1080p monitor in your setup, you probably don’t want text and icons to be at 100 percent. One of the most important settings to get right is the scaling. When Windows 10 first came out, putting the clock on both taskbars also wasn’t possible, so the slow arrival isn’t a suprise. That’s a little annoying, but a fix for clocks in multiple monitors is coming, and you should already have it if you’re in the Windows 11 dev channel. Players will not have to worry about which platform they can play Carrion making it easier for everyone. The reason why Carrion is not kid-friendly is because of all the violence the game has.Ĭarrion is known as one of the games which are available on all platforms.
